Often
MALLORCA HOLIDAY RENTALS mean a villa somewhere on the island but where so many areas to choose from even towns? Here’s a quick list to give just an inkling of your destination. Is it Mallorca or Majorca? Well both are correct, only thing depends on whether you are speaking to a Spanish native or an English tourist. Whoever it is, it is still the largest of a small group of archipelago islands that are known as the Balearics. The busiest time to go there is during the summer holiday season although cooler than some of the mainland coastal towns it is still going to have an average temperature of 20 degrees Celsius.
People often mistake it as the name of the town and not the island. Majorca is made up of many smaller villages each has a slightly different character. Palma is the capital city and port on the Island, bordered by rocky inlets and marinas on the south side while a flat central zone extending from Palma is known as Es Pla. With two uninhabited islands one just off the south-east, Cabera and Dragonera which is in the west. The airport called Palma de Mallorca is about 8 kilometres from the centre of the city. It’s a very touristic town with a few archaeological finds like the Arab Baths and the Cathedral La Seu, built on top of a previous Arabic Mosque and which took 400 years to build. Other sites worth seeing are the Royal Palace of la Almudaina, the summer residence of the Patrimonio Nacional. Just 3 kilometres outside of Palma is Bellver Castle: built in 1300 it started life as the Royal Residence but for the last 300 years has been used as a prison.
Manacor is on the eastern side of Mallorca and one of the biggest towns in the island. Just 10 minutes away is the small town of Porto Cristo. The local government keen to encourage tourists to visit and have been busy building new roads so it is now a lot easier to visit the two sets of caves Cueves dels Hams and Cuevas del Drach. Manacor has the largest street market. Open on Monday mornings and on what was once the site of a Roman Port. It’s also home to the Bronze age Megaliths "The Talaiots": some believe that they were once lookout towers while others believe they were fortifications.
For something a little different quieter even the Camp de Mar in the far south corner of the island is a popular stop off for tourists and family groups. It is one of those small villages that have managed to keep the leading commercial businesses at bay but it does mean higher prices. Maybe a fair price to pay for a chance to relax away from the rest of the tourist crowds, especially during peak periods.
Alcudia is another quiet destination in the north of the island with an ideal family beach and shallow water down in the Alcudia Bay.
The party town of Palma Nova is the popular destination for the 18 to 30 groups all out to party so stay clear if it is a family holiday. A great place for those hen and stag nights with plenty of late night bars and nightclubs though. Although the resort does cater for all ages and there is a lot of commercialism with a Pizza Hut, McDonald's and KFC. Find your ideal
